Coronavirus: Over one quarter of 16 and 17 year olds had vaccine

Over a quarter of 16 and 17-year-olds had at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, the ministry of health said on Sunday.

In addition, by the end of July 73.8 per cent of the adult (18+) population have received at least the first dose while 65.3 per cent have completed their vaccination course. This puts Cyprus ahead of the European total of 70.4 per cent with the first dose and 57.5 with full coverage.

Vaccination coverage for all age groups increased during July with 40.5 per cent of 18 and 19-year-olds now also having had at least one jab.

Older age groups continue to have the highest coverage, with 95.5 per cent of people over 80 having had at least one vaccine, in addition to 94.9 per cent of those in their 70s. Among those in their 60s, 86.6 per cent have had at least one dose.

Among those in their 50s 79.4 per cent have had the first dose, while more – 82.9 per cent – of those in their 40s have had one.

For those in their 20s the figure by July 31 that had had at least one dose reached 52.3 per cent and those in their 30s 65 per cent.

The ministry of health estimates that 188,090 people aged 18 and above have not had a single shot, among whom 129,267 are aged 18 to 39.

Meanwhile by district Paphos continues to lead the way where 84 per cent of adults have received at least one dose. Coming a close second is Famagusta where 80.4 per cent have had at least one shot followed by Nicosia with 74.1, Limassol with 71.8 and Larnaca with 67.8.

Walk in vaccine centres which have been in operation for the last two weeks of July have so far seen 10,626 people receive a shot.
