Authorities investigate causes of Tala fire

Authorities are investigating the causes of a fire that broke out in an area that is difficult to access near Tala village in Paphos.

The fire broke out in Zelemenos area at around 5am on Wednesday and was brought under control about three hours later, said fire service spokesman Andreas Kettis.

Two helicopters and ground forces from Paphos fire stations, the forest department, game and fauna service and the district administration as well as police helped extinguish the fire according to Kettis.

A tractor helped create access roads to firefighters in the area, the spokesman added.

The fire destroyed about three hectares of dry grass, wild vegetation and several trees.

Firefighters remain at the scene to extinguish any hidden fire fronts and prevent any flare-ups, Kettis said.
