Coronavirus: 90% of patients at Famagusta Hospital not vaccinated

Famagusta general hospital

About 90 per cent of patients with coronavirus who are hospitalised at the Famagusta referral hospital for Covid have not been vaccinated, Amalia Hadjiyianni, the facility’s scientific director said on Friday.

Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency, Hadjiyianni added that currently there are 66 people being treated at the hospital, six of whom are in the high dependency unit, as they need closer monitoring.

The youngest patient is 23 years old and the oldest 92, while the average age stands at 60 years.

“There are only 11 vacant beds left at the hospital. We are expecting some patients to be admitted today, but, at the same time, other patients have completely recovered and will be discharged soon,” she said.

As far as the public holiday weekend of August 15 is concerned, Hadjiyianni said all doctors, nurses and other staff at the hospital are on standby in case of increased hospitalisations.

Finally, she called on people to strictly observe health protection measures, while taking advantage of the walk-in clinics where they can receive the jab against Covid-19.

“Even people who have already been vaccinated should not be complacent as they too can contract the virus if they do not observe the protocols,” she said.

Other than the 66 people receiving treatment at Famagusta hospital, 133 are currently quarantining at the Eden Rehabilitation Centre in Tersefanou.
