Larnaca eyes more development projects

Larnaca Municipality is pressing ahead with development plans for the town that include a centre on underwater archaeology and the relocation of some municipal offices to the old hospital, its mayor Andreas Vyras told the Cyprus News Agency.

Other plans include the renovation of Alkis and Acropolis Square, the reconstruction of Melathron Evgirias centre, the relocation of the Home for the Elderly and the unification of the Archaeological site of Ancient Kitium, the Mosaic “Labour of Hercules” and the Archaeological Museum of Larnaca.

Other projects concern Pattiheio Park, Salina Park, the pedestrian walkways, facilities for the disabled, the renovation of the Police Director’s residence, the construction of the Addiction Treatment Centre, of an Artists’ Park and other gathering and entertainment spaces, he said.

“Approval by Larnaca Municipal Council of the 2021 – 2030 study on sustainable urban development strategy for the city and wider Larnaca area which includes the municipalities of Aradippou, Livadia, Dromolaxia – Meneou, Athienou, Larnaca and Voroklini Community Council, will give impetus to projects, which are estimated to amount €324 million and will be co-financed by various funds,” Vyras said.

Two projects have already been delivered, the Municipal Garden and the Larnaca Club which, among others, also hosts the traditional handicrafts centre. There, visitors can see the live construction of folk artworks intertwined with the culture of Larnaca, while there is also a pottery workshop.

Regarding the ongoing projects in Larnaca, he said that among them are the Municipal Market and the Larnaca Community Center. These two projects are expected to be delivered to the Municipality around the end of October. “The renovation of facilities for the disabled in the centre of Larnaca is also in progress. The project is expected to be completed in October, while the Zouhouri complex and the Square will be delivered in March 2022 “.

“The construction of the tennis courts in the area of ​​the Larnaca Community Centre was also completed, while the Municipal Dog Park, an attraction for both dogs and their owners, was recently handed over,” he added.

The construction of the municipal skate and ​​roller skate park, which is co-financed by the Cyprus Sports Association, also started in Larnaca, within the framework of a grant for the improvement of sports facilities.

“Two other projects were recently completed to deal with the problem of floods in Larnaca. These are the S8 and S9 stormwater pump stations in Sotiros and Chrysopolitissa area” he concluded.
