Police said two men died in separate traffic accidents in Nicosia early on Friday.

The first accident took place at around 4.15am on the Palechori to Anthoupoli road when under conditions that are being investigated, Andreas Michaelides, 34, lost control of his car and crashed into a tree.

The fire service had to free him from the wreckage.

He was transferred to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Preliminary examinations suggest the man was not wearing his seatbelt.

About an hour later, a car on Spyros Kyprianou avenue hit and fatally injured 35-year-old Antonis Antoniou, who was riding his bicycle in front of the car.

Antoniou was transferred to Nicosia general hospital via ambulance where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police said he was wearing a safety helmet.

The driver of the car, a 46-year-old man was arrested. He tested negative to an alcohol test.

The conditions of the accident are being investigated, police said.

Anyone who has information about the accidents can contact police on 22802108 or the citizen’s line on 1460 or their nearest police station.
