Five deaths from coronavirus and 381 new cases were announced by the health ministry on Monday, out of 44,374 PCR and rapid tests, a positivity rate of 0.84.

A 70-year-old woman died on Monday at the Nicosia general hospital, while another, aged 87, and a 49-year-old man died the previous day the health ministry said.

On August 13, an 87-year-old woman died in Larnaca general hospital and a week earlier a 79-year-old woman died in Paphos general hospital. It was unclear why these deaths were only reported on Monday.

With those fatalities, the death toll now stands at 461 since the pandemic outbreak.

Some 234 patients were hospitalised for Covid-19, including 85 in serious condition of whom 46 are intubated. One of the patients is treated in the ICU and 38 more in high dependency units.

The ministry had said that approximately 81 per cent of the patients are not vaccinated.

The majority, 171 cases, were traced through private testing while another 127 were traced at the state mobile rapid testing units.

Forty of the cases were detected following a private initiative, 18 through contact tracing and 16 from samples at the state’s laboratories and hospitals.

Nine cases were traced at the airports, the ministry said.

A total of 109,253 people have tested positive for Covid in Cyprus.

Meanwhile, 199 cases were traced in the north in the last 24 hours, as a woman who was treated for Covid died on Monday. Her death brings the total number of deaths in the north to 44, since the pandemic outbreak.
