Cyprus’ Retail Trade Index has declined steadily since March. The index reading was 131.2 in that month, and it declined to 126.0 in April, and finally to 123.0 in May (the reading for June in Cyprus is not yet available). For the EU as a whole, the index reading was 115.6 in March, but the April reading showed a decline to a reading of 111.4. Since then the index shows a strengthening of retail trade, hitting a reading of 116.4 in May and rising to 117.5 in June. For the Euro Area, there was a strong reading of 115.4 in March, which fell to 109.1 in April and then came back to a reading of 113.6 in June. The Retail Trade Index is a business cycle indicator which shows the monthly activity of the retail sector in value and volume. It is a short-term indicator for final domestic demand. It should be noted that the volume of sales is different from the volume of (retail) trade services. The latter takes account of changes in the quality of the trade service supplied.
