State appeals child sex abuse sentence as inadequate

The state has appealed as insufficient a seven-year prison sentence for a 73-year-old man who had been convicted of sexually abusing his underage grandchildren, the Legal Service said on Friday.

The appeal followed the man’s sentencing earlier this month by the Larnaca criminal court.

The court sentenced the 73-year-old to concurrent prison terms of seven, five, and four years after he was found guilty of sexually abusing two children aged eight and 13.

The offences took place in the Famagusta district between January and February 2019.
