Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry Natasa Pilides has reiterated that the only way to improve the competitiveness of the Cypriot economy is through the liberalisation of the energy market in Cyprus.

“The main avenue for the improvement of the Cypriot economy’s economy’s competitiveness, with the major cost increases of electricity in mind, both here and in Europe, is through the voting of new legislation that has been put forward at parliament for the full opening of the electricity market and the creation of competition,” Pilides said in a statement on Tuesday, August 31.

Pilides said that there was interest in the Cypriot energy market by various private businesses who wish to become involved with the sector, both in terms of generating and selling electricity as well as to further increase Cyprus’ use of renewable sources of energy.

The piece of legislation Pilides referenced includes provisions on the import of natural gas, energy storage, the study of future environmental effects and how this will dictate policy, budgets related to the European Union recovery fund, the promotion of the EuroAsia Interconnector, the installation of 400,000 smart readers between 2022 and 2025, the promotion of net metering and net billing, among other sections.

The Cyprus Computer Society (CCS) announced that Cypriot student Theofanis Orfanou won the silver medal at the European Junior Olympiad in Informatics (EJOI).

Orfanou, a student at Pascal Limassol, competed remotely between August 24 and August 28. Orfanou also took part in the International Olympiad in Informatics which took place between June 19 and June 25 of this year.

In the same competition, Cyprus won two bronze medals through Charalambos Georgiou and Dimitris Chrysostomou. This was the first time in 30 years of participation where Cyprus won a medal at the competition.

Cypriots Christos Falas, Loukas Louka, Orestis Souzou and Polykarpos Christodoulou also took part in the competition, all of whom the CCS also thanked for their noteworthy performances.
