TV Shows We Love: Killing Eve by Stavros Nikolaou

tv shows we love

Phoebe Waller Bridge is a larger-than-life TV writer. When she created Fleabag she was applauded by critics and audiences alike, sweeping all available awards. Then she undertook the BBC’s American spy drama Killing Eve inspired by Luke Jennings’ book Codename Villanelle.

The two protagonists, Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer in the roles of Eve Polastri and Villanelle are the most pleasurable element of the show. With its cat-mouse hunting game, plenty of black humour, bold, well-written smaller, and larger roles (Fiona Shaw is exemplary as an MI6 agent Carolyne), it would not be an exaggeration to describe Killing Eve a pop masterpiece. A true game-changer that transforms all we knew about lead female characters.

Oh is one of the best actresses out there today. Not so much in terms of repertoire, but mostly because she is so much different in each role. She succeeds in overcoming the convention of acting contained in each role and moves into the ‘skin of the character’ with unprecedented respect and tenderness. It is impossible not to love and not to sympathise with the always fragile but also stubborn Eve. She simply cannot resist the apple of sin in any way. But, what if maybe she should not?

And then there is Comer as Villanelle. A true star. The ultimate female role, and a TV monument to feminism. Plus she manages to oust Carrie Bradshaw of Sex and the City from the eternal TV throne of fashion having a clearly more interesting wardrobe without overflowing stereotypes at any point.

With a planned fourth and final season, Killing Eve is certainly driving the search for strong female roles on television in the right direction, even though they are traditionally stronger than those seen in the cinema.

Can anyone say no to even more great female lead roles? Based on Killing Eve I can’t!
