Police are investigating a complaint that hackers stole more than $35 million (approximately €29.5m) in cryptocurrencies earlier this month.

The crime was reported to the police on Wednesday by the 39-year-old director of a technical services company in Limassol.

According to his statement, he received an email on his computer on August 6, which appeared to be from one of his colleagues.

However, the complainant claimed that through that email, hackers gained access to the system and data of a company, which is registered abroad and to which the Limassol-based company provide technical services.

Two days later, cryptocurrencies of an estimated value of $35m were stolen from various electronic wallets, the man told police.

Limassol CID and the economic crime investigation office are investigating the case.
