It has been a relatively quiet year for the local art scene but Limassol gallery Exhibit8 is launching its new season with two exhibitions. Arriving first at the gallery is Irene Fani Efstathiou’s exhibition Miracle of Life, opening on September 8.

The exhibition consists of various paintings and drawings based on the different stages of pregnancy and motherhood. The artist builds a narrative between the audience and her artwork about her experiences, thoughts and emotions. Through the series, Irene aims to illustrate the first stage of pregnancy and how a woman’s body changes through this journey. Irene’s exhibition will run until September 11, days before another art showcase is due to open at the gallery.

Come September 15 and Stavri Pidia’s Words with a Story exhibition will take place with a series of works with which the artist expresses her views, emotions and perspectives about social issues and challenges the world around us.

Stavri is a Cypriot abstract and contemporary artist influenced by everyday social problems and themes. Born in Limassol in 1993, she studied Graphic Design in De Montfort, UK and then continued with a Master’s Degree in Digital Media and Journalism at the Cyprus University of Technology. Currently, she’s doing her second Masters in Arts and Culture Management at Rome Business School and in 2018 she began taking part in multiple group exhibitions when she decided to start working as a professional artist. Her first solo exhibition Enigma took place in June 2019 where she addressed mental illnesses.

Her paintings usually address issues that deal with social injustice and awareness or her personal reflections. The purpose of her art is to express her point of view on certain stereotypes while making the viewers wonder about the final outcome and what it has to say. The main characteristic of her work is the abstract brush strokes, the use of colours and the contrast between either the elements of the painting or the painting and the meaning behind it. At the moment she is working on creating a new style with a combination of minimal lines along with her previous abstract expression.

Part of her latest exhibition’s profit will be donated to SPAVO, the non-profit association for the Prevention and Handling of Violence in the Family. The opening night will include music, wine and of course plenty of art with a story to tell.
