A 54-year-old man, partner of a 58-year-old British woman who was critically injured after being hit by a car in the Paphos district on Saturday, is under arrest as police investigate a suspected case of domestic violence.

The suspect appeared before Paphos District Court on Monday which issued a two-day remand order.

A Paphos police spokesman told the Cyprus Mail that there was testimony that the woman had allegedly argued with her partner before the accident and that she had reportedly been seen with bruise marks.

The woman reportedly left her home on foot after arguing with her partner.

Police said a driver had seen the woman on the Peyia-Kathikas road, avoided her, and then stopped his car to help her. However, moments later, she was hit by a car driven by a 30-year-old man from France as she tried to cross the road.

Initially police were not in a position to identify the victim, but earlier on Monday issued a statement that they had done so. The woman, a permanent resident of Paphos district, remains in critical condition at Nicosia General Hospital where she was transferred from Paphos general because of the severity of her condition.

The 30-year-old driver was remanded for two days and is expected to be released later today.
