What to do if you’ve been in a car accident while traveling

car accident

If you’ve ever been in a car accident, you can relate to that rush of panic that overwhelms you. Is everyone safe? What do I do now? How can I possibly afford this?

Getting in a car accident in your area is already a lot to handle. But what happens if you get into a car accident when you are in a different state? You might be wondering if the same rules apply or who you should hire to help as a lawyer.

Here are a few things you’ll want to know if you’ve been in a car accident while traveling.

Call local authorities

First and foremost, no matter how small the accident is, you’ll want to check to make sure everyone involved is safe. Then you’ll want to contact the authorities. If you’re within the United States, it would be a no-brainer to call 911. However, if you’re in another country, you’ll want to contact their local authorities instead.

Make sure before traveling to know what the emergency number is within that country. You’re already going to have a whirlwind of questions running through your head when a car accident happens. This way, you’ll be prepared if you find yourself in such a predicament.

Takedown insurance information

Again, the laws are different based upon where it is the accident took place. If it’s within the United States, you’ll always want to trade insurance information with the other people involved in the collision. If it’s a rental car, you’ll want to head over to the next step by contacting your car rental company regardless of what country you’re in.

Contact your car rental company

Maybe you’re on a road trip when a car accident happens with your own personal vehicle. If this is the case, you already have your own insurance. They can help you take care of the rest. However, if you’re in another state or country and have rented a car, you’ll want to make sure you get in touch with your car rental company as soon as it’s safe and authorities have been notified.

They’ll need to get involved to ensure their specific instructions for car accident protocol are being followed. The rental company will have to set you up with obtaining a new vehicle for your trip as well.

Contact your travel insurance company

Travel insurance exists for a reason, and a car accident is surely one of them. If you set up your traveler’s insurance before your trip, you’ll want to contact them with as much information as you can provide. There could be several other benefits that could help you financially that you might not have realized.

Set up a consultation with a lawyer

If you’re uncertain whether or not you should hire a lawyer if you’ve been in a car accident while traveling, it’s worth having a consultation. If you’re in another state, you’ll want to contact a lawyer that is licensed in the state that has jurisdiction over the area in which the accident occurred. For example, if you are from Houston but got into a car accident in Boston, you’ll want to make sure you hire a car accident lawyer that is licensed in Boston.

Don’t be afraid to have a consultation because you think it might seem greedy. There could be substantial financial repercussions down the road that don’t necessarily present themselves right away.

Consulting with a lawyer can help you to avoid any confusion, frustration, or financial burden in the future.

Getting into a car accident, no matter where you are, can be scary. It can even be more overwhelming when you’re traveling. Try not to panic and do your best to remain calm.

Adding any extra anxiety won’t help you to address the situation properly. Keep a level head and make sure that everyone involved is safe before following the next steps.
