Robotex Cyprus returns after two-year hiatus

The Pancyprian Robotex Robotics Competition made its return earlier this month following two years of cancellations due to the pandemic and its resulting restrictions.

Organised by the Cyprus Computer Society (CCS), the fourth iteration of the competition took place at the Agiou Ioanni Chrysostomou school in Lakatamia, Nicosia.

“We are proud to have Robotex Cyprus in our school and I wish everyone good luck,” school principal Ioulia Schiza said.

“In such competitions, the most important thing is the participation and experience and not the winning as such. We are grateful to the Cyprus Computer Society for its contribution,” Schiza added.

The competition was preceded by another two-day event the week before with the Line Following & SUMO challenges, where young participants teamed up and assigned coaches to create and program robots.

This was followed by the Exhibition of Educational Robotics, where elementary school students presented their robotic projects. The projects had to adhere to the theme of ‘Green Smart Cities’.

The winning teams of the Robotex Cyprus competition will subsequently travel to Estonia to compete in the two-day event Robotex International taking place on November 5. Cyprus’ last entry in this competition back in 2019 yielded several international awards for the participants. Moreover, family members of the Cypriot participants will be able to attend the competition as spectators, provided all designated safety measures are adhered to.

“This year’s competition became a reality despite the problems of the coronavirus thanks to the efforts of the organizing team, our volunteers and supporters,” CCS Board Chairman Costas Agrotis said.

“I hope that the pandemic will pass and next year’s competition will be a celebration of technology with the presence of parents, friends and associates,” Agrotis added.

Robotex Cyprus also included the participation of two teams from Poland, who entered the competition to train for the international edition of the competition.
