Bullet from army firing range hits car

Στρατόπεδο «Στέλιου Μαυρομμάτη», Σ

A bullet which appears to have been fired from a national guard shooting range in Sia struck the window of a man’s car as he was driving past.

Defence ministry spokesman Christos Pieris told local media on Wednesday that it is a unique incident and investigations are underway to assess how the bullet struck the car at a distance of 3.8km.

“Measures are strictly adhered to,” he said, adding that it would be incredibly difficult for someone to aim and fire over the hill.

The police and national guard are both investigating the incident, with initial assessments leading those involved to believe that the bullet struck a hard surface and bounced off, gaining height, and exiting the firing range.

The car in question was being driven by a 62-year-old along the old Kornos road who waited until he reached his house to assess the damage.
