UK parliament speaker to visit Cyprus, address House

The speaker of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom will pay a three-day visit to Cyprus from Monday, February 14, at the invitation of House president Anita Demetriou, the House of Representatives announced on Friday.

This is the first official visit of a House of Commons speaker to Cyprus and constitutes a landmark in parliamentary relations between the two countries, it added.

Sir Lindsey Hoyle will be received by President Nicos Anastasiades and hold separate meetings with Demetriou, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and the president and members of the House foreign affairs committee. The House president will also host an official lunch in his honour.

Sir Lindsey will address the House plenary at a special session on Tuesday, February 15 at 4.00 pm at the Philoxenia conference centre and will participate in a roundtable discussion with university students on parliaments and democracy.

The speaker will also visit the walled city of Nicosia, the British contingent in UNIFYCP and the British bases at Episkopi and Akrotiri, the announcement concluded.
