Coronavirus: Cases up 78 per cent in last 14 days (updated)

Coronavirus cases and hospitalisations increased by about 78 per cent in the last 14 days compared with the previous two weeks, the biweekly epidemiological report showed on Friday.

However, the number of patients in ICUs remained the stable.

In total, 59,800 cases were detected in the 14 days from March 15, as a result of 1,246,516 tests, translating to a 14-day cumulative diagnosis rate of 6,734.2 per 100,000 people.

This is a large spike compared with the previous period when 33,488 coronavirus cases were reported from 49,534 PCR and 1,208,489 rapid tests, giving a 14-day cumulative diagnosis rate of 3,771.2 per 100,000 population.

The median age of the new cases is 35, while the median age of adult cases is 42.

Women accounted for slightly more cases than men based on the available information.

Sex information was available for 44,331 of the total cases, with 23,796 of the cases detected in females and 20,535 in males, the report said.

By age group, 56 per cent of the cases were detected among people aged 20 to 59, 28.4 per cent in children and teenagers up the age of 19 while 15.6 per cent of the cases concerned people aged 60 and over. For another 13 cases, age was not available.

District information was known for 47,192 cases, of which 17,855 were reported in Nicosia, 13,909 in Limassol, 7,288 in Larnaca, 5,376 in Paphos, 2,740 in Famagusta, while 24 cases had residence abroad.

Meanwhile, as of March 30, 178 people with Covid-19 were being treated at state hospitals compared with 100 in the previous report.

Of these, 55.8 per cent were men.

Over one third of the hospitalised patients come from Limassol district which accounts for 36.3 per cent of hospitalisations.

Despite the increase in hospitalisations, only five patients were intubated in ICUs, the same as the previous report issued last month. The median age of these patients is 69.

Regarding mortalities, experts wrote that 933 people had died from the virus on the island up until March 30.

They added that 44.4 per cent of the 73 coronavirus deaths in March concerned unvaccinated people aged 70 and older.

January 2022 remains the month with most coronavirus fatalities, 110, followed by August, 2021 with 104 deaths and February this year with 99 deaths.
