A 29-year-old man has been arrested for illegally staying in the Republic.

According to Paphos police, the arrest was made on Sunday afternoon by officers at the Polis Chrysochous police station. Examination of his documents revealed he was Egyptian.

The 29-year-old had applied for political asylum in August 2019. His request was rejected in January 2021 and in August 2021 a letter of rejection was sent to him.

The man did not file an appeal before the Immigration Officer within the set date of 30 days and therefore, as of September 2021, he was residing illegally on the island.

The man was taken into custody at the Polis Chrysochous police station.
