Celebrating Improvisation and Experimental music, the Breach Festival is being held for the first time this week in Nicosia. Organised by Make Music Cyprus and in collaboration with the Irtijal Festival in Lebanon, the largest festival in Beirut celebrating its 22nd anniversary, Breach Festival brings two days of music and sounds.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, Theatro Polis in downtown Nicosia invites musicians and music lovers to discover new tunes and improv performances.

The musicians that will host the festival come from Cyprus, Greece, Lebanon and Germany, and all are renowned in the field of improvisation and experimental music with a long history of appearances in recognised venues and festivals around the world.

Nine artists will perform, starting with Marina Tantanozi and Andria Nicodemou on Tuesday at 8pm. Their performance will be followed by Alexia Vassiliou and Alkis Nicolaides with a final set by Thomas Ankersmit wrapping up the first evening. Day two will begin with the AGGA-GAGA duo made up of Alkis Nicolaides and George Bizios. Then the A Trio will take the stage (Mazen Kerbaj, Sharif Sehnaoui and Raed Yassin) before the festival concludes with the Breach Ensemble.

The festival’s mission is to reinforce and support improv practices in Cyprus alongside free jazz, contemporary classical music, experimental electronic music, sound art, and many other uncharted sound areas.
