The European Commission has established an informal working group on halloumi/hellim, which will focus on the correct implementation of the standards agreed in the Protected Designation of Origin scheme for halloumi/ hellim and is calling on interested individuals to apply to become members of the group.

According to an announcement by the Commission, the group will be composed of up to ten members of whom an equal number will come from the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot community, with the members being appointed to represent a common interest. The members can for example be representatives of Chambers of Commerce, representatives of farmers’ organisations or representatives of dairies involved in the production of halloumi, representatives of relevant professional interests and representatives of civil society organisations.

The group, which will meet periodically, is set up to bring about an exchange of information as well as the sharing of experience and good practices among stakeholders relating to their participation in the PDO scheme for halloumi/ hellim and will review the functioning of the inspection system for its production.

The Commission invites individuals to contact the email [email protected] to apply to become members of the group. The deadline for applications is May 10, 2022.

The ministry of agriculture welcomed the announcement saying that the establishment of a bicommunal working group was provided by an EC regulation on the basis of which halloumi was registered as a PDO as well as the EC’s executive decision concerning the transport of goods via the Green Line.

The ministry said that representatives of the producers and of the trade sector will comprise the working group which will exchange views and practices. It also underlined that the goods produced by Turkish Cypriots need to fulfill the prerequisites for public health set by the EU and the prerequisites for PDO products.
