Urban weekend clean-up aims to have a lasting impact

A zero-waste lifestyle is a growing trend, both in Cyprus and abroad. To literally lead a zero-waste life is a difficult task, however, yet that doesn’t mean environmental activists and followers should be put off. Small goals and actions within local communities can still make an impact, whether that is changing daily habits or joining events that aim to have a positive impact.

One of these is an urban clean-up event coming up this Sunday organised by City Friends Club and Agno zero-waste grocery shop. The two team up to provide educational adventures for like-minded individuals and demonstrate that more sustainable living does not cost much and is not impossible.

City Friends Club is a local NGO with a mission to make Cyprus clean. Aiming to clean the streets of Limassol and the surrounding areas and lessen the volume of daily waste, the organisation has a daily cleaning programme. Yet cleaning alone will not resolve the issue, so it also works on various projects to bring awareness of waste-related issues to the people of Cyprus.

Agno zero waste grocery is the first plastic free shop in Cyprus, it offers bulk foods, cleaning products and plastic free accessories to eliminate waste which would end up in landfills and the environment. So far, Agno grocery estimates it has managed to save approximately 8,190 single use plastic packages.

To unleash the potential of developing a zero-waste culture for Limassol residents, City Friends Club and Agno zero waste grocery are teaming up for a collaborative clean-up this weekend. They are meeting up at 9am at Tsirio stadium and along with volunteers will spend around two hours cleaning the area.

During the clean-up, a team of volunteers will not only rid the area of waste, but will also determine the top five most numerous discarded items and propose more environmentally friendly alternatives. Those that want to participate simply need to arrive in comfortable clothes and shoes and the rest will be provided by the organisers in a short morning event that hopes to make a lasting impact.
