A second team of Cypriot health professionals have travelled to the Romanian town of Siret, close to the Ukrainian border to provide medical assistance to refugees fleeing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The team, part of the Volunteer Doctors of Cyprus group, left on Monday night and consists of paediatrician Petros Iacovides, pathologist Danny Theodorou and nurses Elli Barbara Mitsa and Marina Lazarou.

They will provide first aid care to refugees, as well as medicines. However, people with serious injuries or illnesses will be treated at the Siret hospital, the only one in the area equipped to deal with emergencies.

The team aims to remain in Siret for a week. However, the Cypriot doctors are in touch with other medical volunteer groups from other countries to set up a semi-permanent medical centre on the border, in order to assist as many refugees as possible.

According to information from local authorities, over 600,000 refugees from Ukraine have already crossed into Romania.

The first Volunteer Doctors of Cyprus team returned from Siret last week.

House President Annita Demetriou will also travel to the Ukrainian border with Poland on April 19, at the invitation of her Polish counterpart Elzbieta Witek.

A statement released by the House on Tuesday said that Demetriou will visit several refugee centres near the border.

“The purpose of the visit is to better understand the plight of refugees after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine,” the statement said.

“This is another opportunity to show Ukrainians that Cyprus is next to them and to further reiterate our opposition to what Russia has been doing since the start of the war.

“Our people know perfectly well what Ukrainians are experiencing right now, as we have also been invaded by another country more than 47 years ago and we still are under illegal occupation.”

Demetriou will return to Cyprus on April 21.
