The hotel occupancy rate in the Paphos district currently stands at 50 per cent, according to the president of the Paphos hoteliers association (Pasyxe) Thanos Michaelides, who added that during the two weeks following the Catholic Easter holiday, most hotels will be 60 per cent full.

Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency on Friday, Michaelides said the high number of visitors over Easter is a good sign for the country and the feeling among people working in the tourism industry has improved since 2020 and 2021.

“In the past two years, many hotels opened over Easter and had to close down soon after,” Michaelides said.

He added that the UK represents the biggest share of the tourist market in Cyprus, followed by Germany, Israel and other smaller markets.

“We are not expecting any tourists from Russia at the moment, but that might change in the upcoming months. Their absence leaves a huge hole that no other countries can fill.”

Michaelides said the deputy ministry of tourism and tour operators are currently targeting Poland, Germany and Israel.

Regarding the difficulties faced by hoteliers in finding labour, Michaelides said that the government is working on special permit allowing people from third countries to come and work in the country’s tourism industry.

“We are waiting for the legal framework of the plan to be announced in the next few days. It will certainly be a big help for us,” he said.

“At the moment, all hotels have staffing problems, whether they are three-star or five-star hotels.”

Finally, Michaelides said hoteliers are working on a plan that will allow Ukrainian refugees to work in Cyprus’ tourism industry.
