Operas, concerts and family shows coming up at Rialto

20 & 28 04

Just as one event ends, another begins. April is an eventful month at Limassol Rialto theatre, signalling an even busier summer ahead. With a brief break during Holy Week, more performances are to come.

On April 20 and 28 Dionysos Theatre brings the Pop Up Family Show, a play in Greek written by Akis Dimou with a seven-member cast. The play follows Jocasta Papadamou who is trapped in her urban flat, living in emotional agitation and naivety and trying to ignore anything that could possibly change her personal, supposed tranquillity. The family gathering at her house turns into an evening of confessions as Jocasta and her guests make a series of personal revelations.

Through the hilarious dialogue and staggering rhythm of the performance, the characters reveal themselves, having no real connection with one another, not even caring for each other. A depthless and sad life focusing on glamour, conformation, on meaningless and painless things. A dinner where no one is eating since they all have their heads in the clouds.

Then, continuing its collaboration with the ROH-Cinema programme, the theatre will screen on Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Rigoletto, from the Royal Opera House on April 27. Directed by Oliver Mears, this opera production sees Verdi’s masterpiece as a modern morality play that pits power against innocence, beauty against ugliness, in a pitiless world of luxurious decadence, corruption and social decay.

The following two events at Rialto this month bring back the music. On April 29 a concert by the ensembles of the Marios Tokas Limassol Music School will present a repertoire inspired by the Greek entechno music genre. In the second part of the concert, the traditional music of Greece and Cyprus will be featured. The first part will be performed by the school’s Choir, Mandolin Ensemble and Folk Music Ensemble and the second part by the Traditional Music Ensemble.

Wrapping up the month’s events is a concert by one of the most famous pop singers of Greece – Panos Mouzourakis. On April 30, Panos and his band are set to hold a one-of-a-kind concert. Talented and spontaneous, the multi-skilled performer and singer will be hosting a show full of excitement and surprises.
