An upcoming exhibition at the Leventis Municipal Museum traces the works of Cypriot artist Ioannis Kissonerghis. Running from May 17 until October, the Chora – Ioannis Kissonerghis exhibition presents views of the capital, the painter’s beloved birthplace.

As the organisers say the exhibition “is a tribute to the Nicosian Kissonerghis, a man who left his indelible mark on the city with his personal manner. Places, streets, monuments and spaces which are illustrated in his works are identified with postcards and photographs from the rich Photographic Archive of the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia.”

Curated by the Director of the AG Leventis Gallery, Loukia Loizou Hadjigavriel, and the Curator of the Museum, Maria Patsalosavvi, the exhibition will also include some parallel events during its run. A day after the opening, on May 18, two guided tours will take place unveiling Nicosia through the artistic gaze of the painter. The tours will run in Greek at 5.30pm and 6.30pm led by the curator and the assistant curator Chrysostomos Sakallis. Happening on International Museum Day, the tours will be free to attend.

Then on May 28, a creative workshop in Greek for adults will be held. This will be an afternoon guided and interactive walk with museum educator Valia Matsentidou titled Urban Walkers – In the footsteps of Kissonerghis. Inspired by Kissonerghis’ depictions of the alleys of ‘Chora’ (Nicosia), a guided walk will take place in the old city at 5.30pm.

Following in Kissonerghis’ footsteps, the urban walkers will become observers of the capital, as well as contemporary artists creating their own image of Nicosia. This activity will conclude with a creative workshop at the Creativity Centre of the Museum taking inspiration from the city and Kissonerghis’ art.
