MUFG Investor Services, the global asset servicing arm of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, on Wednesday announced that it has appointed Yannis Matsis as managing director and head of its office in Cyprus.

The firm’s new operational centre, which is located in Limassol, was first announced by the company in April, with MUFG Investor Services CEO John Sergides saying at the time that the new office “will provide diversification and further enhance our ability to support our clients”.

The company has said that Matsis will be tasked with overseeing the company’s local asset servicing footprint, its growth within the local Cypriot market, as well as the firm’s business expansion activities in Europe and the Middle East.

The new managing director and Cyprus office head brings 20 years of professional experience in senior positions, having previously built and managed global debt capital market teams across a number of locations, including London, New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore and Sao Paulo.

Furthermore, Matsis is currently serving as chairman of the board of directors of the Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency, known as Invest Cyprus, as well as chairman of the board of directors of the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, and chairman of Point Nine Data Trust.

“We are thrilled to welcome Yannis to our team of professionals in Cyprus, especially at such a pivotal time in the firm’s growth story,” CEO John Sergides said after the appointment was announced.

“Yannis’ impressive track record of successfully building and managing global debt capital market teams will be invaluable as our new office looks to continually support our clients in both Europe and around the world,” Sergides added.

“I have long admired MUFG as a trusted advisor to its clients, providing them with bespoke solutions across services to meet and exceed their operational needs,” Matsis said.

“I look forward to working closely with John and the rest of the team to build out our new Cyprus office during this period of rapid firm growth,” he added.

Moreover, Matsis has also previously served as chief executive officer of Hellenic Bank Group in Cyprus, responsible for managing the bank and its insurance subsidiaries.

Before assuming that position, he was partner and co-founder of Point Nine, a financial technology start-up company that offers technology and middle and back-office trade processing, operations and reporting outsourcing services to financial institutions.

Regarding the new operational centre in Limassol, MUFG Investor Services have previously explained that since 2019, they have been frequently and systematically reviewing their geographic footprint, with a focus on strategically locating operational centres where there is high-quality infrastructure and readily available talent pools.
