International award for Cypriot nurse

nurse
Cypriot nurse Elena Nicolaidou

Cypriot nurse Elena Nicolaidou has been honoured with a Daisy award for extraordinary nurses, given by the US-based Daisy Foundation, it was announced on Monday by the board of the Pancyprian Association of Nurses and Midwives.

An international, recognition programme for nurses who demonstrate extraordinary, compassionate care, the DAISY Award is active in thousands of healthcare facilities around the world.

It was set up in the state of Washington by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at age 33 from complications of an auto-immune disease. During his hospitalisation, his family deeply appreciated the clinical skill and enormous compassion shown by the nurses who took care of him. They felt compelled to thank nurses in a personal way, so they created this award to thank nurses everywhere.

Nicolaidou was nominated for the award by the International Home Care Nurses Organisation at the suggestion of Dr Christiana Kouta for her contribution to home care nursing.

On their website, the DAISY Foundation said that in creating the award, there were three elements the family wanted to ensure its recognition programme included:

A partnership with healthcare organisations to provide on-going recognition of the clinical skill and especially the compassion nurses provide to patients and families all year long.

Flexibility so that The DAISY Award may be tailored to each hospital’s unique culture and values.

The programme was set up in 1999 and now has over 5,000 healthcare facilities and schools of nursing in all 50 states of the US and 31 other countries and territories, committed to honouring nurses with the DAISY Award.

The International Home Care Nurses Organisation (IHCNO) seeks to advance home care nursing around the world by providing a platform where nurses can support and learn from one another.

Nurses are nominated by anyone in the organisation – patients, family members, other nurses, physicians, other clinicians and staff – anyone who experiences or observes extraordinary compassionate care being provided by a nurse.

Home care nursing’s patients include those with acute or chronic health problems, no matter how young or old. Patients include those receiving hospital-at-home, skilled, private duty and palliative services, and many other types of care provided in the patient’s home. IHCNO recognises that home care nursing is a specialised area of nursing practice.

The award ceremony will be held online on June 9 at 5.00 pm Cyprus time (10.00 am US).

It will be accessible on https://us06web.zoom.us/j/85655998435?pwd=ZVlpcEM0MW03T2JWOXpYcmlMUU52UT09
