Early tests carried out on a 34-year-old man who was admitted to Paphos general hospital on Tuesday night with a rash on his torso and face do not indicate monkeypox, the health ministry said on Wednesday.

After being admitted in Paphos medical staff activated the protocol for monkeypox, the man was transferred to the Nicosia general hospital later at night for further tests.

Doctors in Nicosia will continue to carry out tests on the 34-year-old to exclude any possible link to monkeypox.

Monkeypox is a virus that can cause symptoms including fever, aches and presents with a distinctive bumpy rash.

It is related to smallpox, but is usually milder, particularly the West African strain of the virus.

Most people fully recover in two to four weeks.
