Heavy rainfall that hit areas of Nicosia after midday on Tuesday caused some isolated incidents of flooding and also made it tricky for some motorists on the road, with a number of vehicles left immobilised.

The fire brigade received ten calls for assistance to flooded premises, according to the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (Cybc).

According to fire brigade spokesman Andreas Kettis, the calls were mainly about blocked rainwater manholes in Strovolos, Latsia and Dali.

“On three occasions we had to tow immobilised vehicles (none trapped) in the Strovolos industrial area,” said Kettis in a tweet.

A spokesman for the met office told Cybc that torrential rains were also falling intermittently in Mathiatis, Kalo Chorio, Mosfiloti, Pseudas, Geri, Aglandjia, Aradippou and in occupied Nicosia.

According to a met office report, a low pressure system and an unstable air mass is affecting the area.

Mainly clear skies are forecast for Tuesday evening, with intermittent cloud cover. During the morning hours of Wednesday, locally thin fog and low clouds are likely to form, mainly on the southeastern coast and inland areas.

The temperature will drop to around 18 degrees celsius inland, around 20 degrees celsius on the coast and around 11 degrees celsius in the mountains.

Later on Wednesday, initially, partly cloudy skies are forecast. From midday onwards, isolated showers are expected, with the possibility of isolated thunderstorms, mainly in the mountains and inland.

Temperatures will rise to around 30 degrees celsius inland, around 28 on the west coast, around 29 celsius in all other coastal regions and around 22 degrees up in the mountains.

Patchy cloud cover and isolated showers are forecast for Thursday and overcast skies on Friday, with the weather beginning to clear up from Saturday, with temperatures expected to rise gradually and noticeably to above average climatic values.
