Firefighters are battling to extinguish a fire that broke out at a landfill site in Pentakomo.

According to fire service spokesman Andreas Kettis, EMAK fire engines responded to call at 5.25pm to extinguish the fire and additional vehicles from the Forestry Department and the game service were called for assistance.

The blaze started among rubbish and various waste materials, the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) reported.

Kettis added that the fire has been contained so far and there is no risk of spreading, noting that due to the nature of the materials, it will take time to extinguish it.

In a Twitter post, Kettis said the fire service is activating all relevant state agencies to help with the fire.

“To clarify, due to the nature of the burning materials, it will take a significant amount of time to put out the fire,” he concluded.
