TV shows we Love: Surviving Summer

tv show

Expelled from school and sent to Australia, rebellious New York teen makes waves among a young surfer’s circle when she gets there, managing to leave a predictable mess in her wake. Surviving Summer landed on Netflix in June and is fun for both kids and adults, with characters that have a little bit of depth and a backdrop that features some stunning scenery.

The story follows Summer (Sky Katz), whose hotshot businesswoman mother needs to go to the Middle East for a job, so she leaves her to spend six weeks in Shorehaven, a beach town in Australia, with a friend of hers. What quickly becomes obvious is that Summer is a rebel with a golden heart. And despite her best efforts, Summer falls in love with the town, the people and the surf, and in particular Ari Gibson (Kai Lewins).

The show has excellent music which fits seamlessly into the screenplay. How invested the viewer is in the sport that any show or movie is based on, makes a huge difference to the likeability of the content. Surviving Summer also manages to balance surfing with the storyline without overdoing it with the details, making even the most non-sporty viewer imagine themselves on the sea on a surfboard.

Finally, the show will remain a nice way to spend a leisurely weekend in front of your television, as the surf sequences and the competition make for good content, and at only 10 episodes of 30 minutes each this does not mean you need to make too much of a time investment.
