Another extreme high temperature warning is in force on Tuesday, while the forestry department has issued a red alert urging extreme caution because of the risk of forest fires.

The met office’s yellow alert is in force from 11.00 am to 5.00 pm, with temperatures inland expected to hit 41C and humidity intensifying the discomfort.

And the forestry department has warned of an extremely high risk of forest fires as it reminded the public that under the forestry law the lighting of fires without a permit is punishable with prison of up to 10 years and/or a fine of €50,000 and under the prevention of fires in the countryside law by up to five years jail and/or a fine of €20,000.

Anyone who sees smoke or fire should contact the forestry department on 1407 or the fire service on 112, it added.

In its early morning weather forecast, the met office said that Tuesday will be mainly fine although from midday and early in the afternoon there will be increased local cloud in the mountains.

Temperatures will rise to 41C inland, around 33C on the south and east coasts, 35C on the north coast and 31C on the west coast and in the mountains.

Tuesday night will be mainly fine, although at intervals there will be increased low cloud and locally there will be patchy fog.

Temperatures will fall to 22C inland and the west and north coasts, around 23C on the south and east coasts and 21C on the higher mountains.
