The summer hunting season kicked off on Sunday for the island’s hunting enthusiasts, and according to the Game and Fauna Service, more than 19,000 hunters are expected to venture out.

In its announcement, the service stated that in most areas hunting will be allowed every Sunday from August 21 until September 18, as well as on Wednesdays from September 7 until September 14, and noted that all relevant information has already been published through the relevant decrees and hunting maps, Cyprus News Agency (CNA) reported.

As far as turtle dove hunting is concerned, this is allowed again this year from September 4 until September 18, under specific terms and conditions, despite an EU Commission recommendation for a complete ban on turtle dove hunting.

This was achieved after coordinated actions of the Game and Fauna Service, but also due to the measures taken, during last year’s hunting season, for continuous monitoring of turtle dove reproduction in the context of the EU restrictions imposed for the preservation of the turtle dove population.

Meanwhile, the maximum catch for a hunter on an excursion will be three turtle doves, while hunters must record every turtle dove hunted via Artemis Cy (smart phones application) (Android & IOS) which is provided free of charge. Registration is mandatory under the relevant legislation and omission of registration is punishable by an out-of-court fine of €100.

The limit per hunter for the entire hunting period will be 12 turtle doves.

In addition, after relevant permission by granted by the Interior Minister on the recommendation of the Game Service and the Scientific Committee, hunting on a controlled basis and for a limited period, of the palm doves (Streptopelia senegalensis – known to the general public as red turtle dove) will be allowed for the period from August 21 to September 18. The maximum catch will be 30 palm doves for the entire period.

The Game Service has urged hunters who go out on Sunday, August 21 to observe all the written and unwritten laws of hunting and to show the necessary respect to their co-hunters and private property, which will host them.

Meanwhile, the renewal of hunting licences continues throughout the 24-hour period.
