TV shows we love: My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman

tv shows we love

Sometimes a break is needed between hit TV series, wellness docu-series and the re-watching of TV show favourites. Kind of like when you alternate between literature and self-help books to keep the mind alert. That was part of my decision to watch My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman, that is now available on Netflix and with four seasons to enjoy.

As the talk show’s title suggests, American TV host David Letterman invites A-list celebrities and important global figures for a lengthy, in-depth interview. Think Barak Obama, Malala Yousafzai, Jay-Z, Ellen DeGeneres and Melinda Gates.

Some of the interviews are held in a studio in front of a large audience, others are more intimate taking place in the homes of the interviewees, their studios and private spaces. In Billie Eilish’s episode, David visits her studio where she and her brother Finneas record their music. There, the siblings show David how they approach making a song and their process of recording numerous audio files to be compacted into one. Billie’s song Happier than Ever, as she shared in the interview, has some 87 takes compiled into one song!

But besides career highlights and successes, David’s confidence and comfort with TV interviews allows guests to talk about deeply personal matters. Billie openly talks about having Tourette’s syndrome for the first time and what it is like dealing with the diagnosis and being in the public eye. Straight after, she and David head to a go-kart track for a friendly race and a look inside the singer’s favourite activities.

Singer Lizzo shares her flute collection and tries to get David to record a little tune. With Malala, David joins her as she gives a tour of Oxford University to future students and they end up playing a game of foosball. And before you know it, you are four seasons in, 24 episodes down.
