Series of interactive events at exhibition

2

The Mythographies exhibition that runs from September 3 to October 27 in Paphos not only presents the retrospective work of artist Mary Plant but also offers a series of parallel events. Coming up in early September, visitors will be able to explore the diverse oeuvre of the visual artist over the past 40 years but also get inside details and hands-on experiences through September and October.

Mythographies, curated by Marina Christodoulidou and Marina Demosthenous, is an exhibition that many anticipate. Co-organised by the deputy ministry of culture, Paphos Municipality and Kimonos Art Center, it takes place at the Palia Ilektriki Cultural Centre in Paphos and is now ready to open its doors.

Once up and running, several sidebar events will complement the exhibition. Two are taking place on September 10, one is a walk-in tour by the artist herself in conversation with Marina Yerali and the other is a bookbinding workshop.

Happening first is the tour which will take place at Palia Ilektriki at 11am. Throughout the tour, the two artists will have a heart-to-heart talk about Plant’s retrospective exhibition with a focus on Aphrodite’s Library. The event takes place on the occasion of the current exhibition, and more specifically on creating artworks in book format from the medium’s grassroots until today.

Next, Yerali will continue the activities for the day by running a bookbinding workshop at the Cultural Centre. Using long stick binding and material, the workshop will guide a maximum of ten participants into the making of handcrafted books by exploring elements of the book structure.

Addressed to creatives, artists and paper aficionados, the participants will receive all of the materials and tools needed for the bookbinding. This includes handmade papers from Nepal and India, and linen threads and tapes for bookbinding. Throughout the two-and-a-half-hour workshop, participants will learn how to create by hand a simple soft-cover book structure and by the end of the workshop, each participant will have made their own handbound bookwork.

The exhibition’s parallel activities will continue in the weeks to come and will welcome October with a musical interlude. On Saturday, October 1 several musicians will perform live at Palia Ilektriki with pieces inspired by Plant’s work. Ayis Ioannides’ Anthogramma piece was influenced by Plant’s 2005 artwork titled Anthograms and on October 1 it will be performed by Virginie Bove, George Georgiou, Nenad Bogdanovic and Drosostalida Moraiti. Playing the flute, clarinet, accordion and piano, the musicians will bring Ioannides’ music to life.

Constantinos Y. Stylianou’s piece Processional will also be performed in the evening, inspired by Plant’s 2000 Aphroditissa work. Concluding the event’s agenda, the curators will present the books published as part of the exhibition namely, Mary Plant: Mythographies, co-published by the Deputy Ministry of Culture and Armida Books, along with the self-published artist’s book Anthograms by Mary Plant
