Villagers of Ioannina City live in Lympia

A concert in Lympia next week organised by DownTown Live will entice music enthusiasts to the capital’s suburbs.

The Villagers of Ioannina City is a folk-rock band from Ioannina, Greece, formed in 2007. Influenced by the Greek folk music from the region of Epirus, the band plays post, stoner and psychedelic rock. Perhaps what makes their music and performances stand out are the folk instruments members of the band play such as bagpipes, flutes and didgeridoos. Despite blasting experimental heavy rock, the Villagers of Ioannina City fuses Greek folk music which features polyphonic rhythms and beats with modern psychedelic forms, creating a sound where the dominant solo instrument is the clarinet.

Following performances in some of the biggest rock festivals and numerous sold-out shows in Greece, the band has embarked on a European tour. As part of that tour, they will travel to Cyprus for a single performance. On September 9, the band will present a full electronic set at the open-air theatre of Lympia Municipal Park for an evening of blended Greek rock.
