The second half of the 25th Cultural Festival taking place at Axiothea Mansion in Nicosia is about to fill the autumn months with even more performances and art evenings. Kicking off its second programme for 2022, which is this year dedicated to the memory of its creator and founder, Michalis Pieri, is a musical performance by the Electric World ensemble on Sunday.

The electro-acoustic ensemble combines traditional melodies from the heritage of Cyprus and the neighbouring areas with elements of Western harmony and modern textures, bringing out a fresh and unique approach and creating an ambient but energetic vibe with a powerful atmosphere. On stage seven musicians will meet to bring these sounds to life – vocalist Vasiliki Anastasiou, guitarist and composer Ermis Michail, saxophonists Charis Ioannou and Marios Charalambous, trumpet player Elias Ioannou, electric bassist Andreas Rodosthenous and drummers Andreas Stefanou.

A theatrical production will take place next from September 9 to 11 by Theatro Ena. The performance Defol – Smyrna 1922 is based on Dimitris Karagiannis’ novel, which describes the last days of Smyrna before the destruction of the city in 1922. By presenting the tragedy of thousands of people scrambling to flee from the burning city, the performance also pays tribute to those who were lost and to those who survived the uprooting and lived their lives as refugees.

On September 12 it is time for young talent to take the floor of Axiothea Mansion. Young artists of the Musical Talent Development Programme at the University of Cyprus take up the challenge to perform some of the greatest works for soloists and musical ensembles, accompanied by their tutors and under the artistic direction of Petros Stylianou.

The live music will continue on the following evening as well with masterpieces of romanticism by Brahms and Mendelssohn. Young musical talents from Cyprus and Crete will perform two of the finest examples of masterful musical composition for string ensembles ever written: Brahms’ String Sextet, Op. 18 and Mendelssohn–Bartholdi’s String Octet, Op. 20. The concert on September 13 marks the beginning of a promising cooperation between the Musical Talent Development Programme of the University of Cyprus and the Music Ensembles, the Municipal Conservatory and the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Heraklion, Crete.

Around ten more performances will take place as part of the 25th Cultural Festival of the University of Cyprus at Axiothea Mansion, filling Nicosia with music, theatre and poetry until mid-October.
