Nicosia participates in the European Heritage Days

2 (1)

European Heritage Days takes place in dozens of countries and this year Cyprus is taking part as well. The initiative was first launched in 1985 by the Council of Europe and in 1999 the European Union joined the action. Alongside numerous monuments and sites around Europe that open their doors to visitors eager to learn about cultural heritage, Nicosia too hopes to engage its public with local heritage.

On September 17, Europe Direct Nicosia – University of Cyprus organises an event within the framework, this year with a pan-European theme of Sustainable Cultural Heritage – Preserving the Past for Future Generations. Held at Gardens of the Future between 4pm and 10pm, visitors will have the opportunity to follow a basket weaving workshop and make their own baskets as they are traditionally done in Cyprus. After the end of the workshop, guests will taste Cypriot cocktails and drinks inspired by the publication of the Department of Agriculture’s Cocktails from Cyprus – Tradition with a Twist while local band Rumba Attack will perform live.

A day before the workshop at Gardens of the Future, the Europe Direct Nicosia – University of Cyprus will organise one more event. A collaboration between the University of Cyprus Library and the European Documentation Centre will bring a ceramics workshop titled Promoting Cypriot Tradition. Visitors are invited to the library to participate in a one-hour workshop at 10am and leave with a ceramic creation of their own.
