8΄20”: exhibition to open in Nicosia

8 20

8΄20” is the distance in light minutes between the earth and the sun. It is also the title of a new exhibition that opens in Nicosia this month showcasing the works of Vera Gavrielidou-Hadjida. The exhibition 8΄20”: Vera Gavrielidou-Hadjida, organised by The Lefteris Economou Foundation at Garage art space, is the final part of a trilogy of exhibitions dedicated to shedding light on the works and the histories of female Cypriot artists born at the beginning of the 20th century.

The trilogy began with the exhibition Loukia Nikolaidou: Stories, followed by The Sculptress: Pavlina Pavlidou and this autumn the foundation shines the spotlight on another local female artist.

Organisers say her work is “an indelible part of Cypriot art history – a history which this exhibition wants to challenge.” A selection of her artworks will be exhibited, centring around those from the 70s and 80s, strongly inspired by European art movements such as surrealism and constructivism. “Vera’s work is impressively diverse and rich in experimentation, exploring various artistic genres and philosophies, ranging from geometry to abstract expressionism,” they say.

“This exhibition,” they add, “is an invitation to dive into Vera’s vivid landscapes. Landscapes that sometimes manifest as dreamscapes, deconstructed plan-views of cities, abstract geometrical shapes of what was, or what could be – with celestial bodies/ suns being repeated throughout.”

In addition to the exhibition, the theatre collective Seson Ginekes after an exploration of interviews taken from people close to Vera, and in collaboration with an actress, will create a performative response in the exhibition space. The research process and the performance are an attempt to allow female artists to rethink and investigate the story of Vera through their female gaze. The dates of the performance will be announced shortly via the exhibition’s Facebook event page (@8΄20”: Vera Gavrielidou-Hadjida).
