A member of the British military has been arrested by Cyprus police on allegations of rape and was remanded for seven days on Thursday, following a court appearance in Paphos.

“I can confirm that a member of the British military has been arrested but I can also confirm that they are not a member of British forces Cyprus,” the British bases told the Cyprus Mail.

They stated that they cannot comment any further as it is an ongoing investigation.

Police confirmed to the Cyprus Mail on Wednesday that they had arrested the 19-year-old suspect, following a 16-year-old’s complaint that she was forced to have sex against her will.

Local media reported that the 16-year-old is a British tourist who was visiting Paphos, while the soldier has also been reportedly linked to the British bases.

It has also been reported that the complainant and the suspect met at a club/bar in Kato Paphos.

The 16-year-old subsequently went to the soldier’s apartment. She has alleged that the 19-year-old then forced her into having sex with him against her will.

After his arrest, the 19-year-old made some allegations which are being investigated.
