Three new art exhibitions in Nicosia

Adding to the capital city’s art scene are three new exhibitions which open in May. Solo shows and group showcases highlight more of the creative work that Cyprus-based artists and beyond are making. Throughout the whole month of May, Gloria Gallery will feature small and large works by a variety of artists. Exhibited on the gallery’s walls will be pieces by Argyris Constantinou, Glyn Hughes, Doros Herakleous, Pindaros Michaelidis, Dimitris Michlis, Lefteris Olympios, Stefano Paci, Mariam Soukhanova-Foukara, Olga Spanou, Susan Vargas and Johannes van Vught.

Opening on May 6 is Arthur Debert’s Stones & Stones Ltd exhibition at Korai Space. The showcase will last until May 27 and an opening event will take place on Saturday from 2pm to 8pm. Writing about the exhibition, Carola Uehlken says: “Arthur Debert’s exhibition opens conversations about the influences of new discoveries and storytelling on our interaction with nature. The magical fibres between stones in the village of Amiantos, Cyprus, where the largest asbestos mine in Europe was located, inspired games and imaginative dialogues about geological time, the transmission of knowledge and threats to human health.”

Later on in the month, Prozak Kafeneio will host Kompi’s third solo exhibition titled Sandy Days. Opening on May 18, this exhibition acts as a love letter to the artist’s adopted home of Cyprus. “Through this personal exploration of the island’s stunning nature and endless summer vibes,” writes the event description, “Kompi recreates some of his favourite spots in Cyprus. In his own words, ‘painting everything that makes me fall in love with the island over and over again’.

“Think epic sunsets over the Akamas, views out across the wild Kato Pyrgos coastline, and masterfully detailed reflections of swimming, surfing and diving into the turquoise depths of the Mediterranean Sea. The show will take place between May 18 and 27 at the Common Room next to Prozak, and various painting sizes will be available to accommodate all budgets and wall spaces.”
