Museums all around the island are participating in events this month to mark a double special occasion. International Museum Day 2023 is celebrated on May 18 and this year its theme is Museums, Sustainability and Wellbeing while a few days earlier the European Night of Museums is held on May 13, sparking a series of exciting events for all.

In Cyprus, the Department of Antiquities of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works and the Cyprus National Committee of the International Council of Museums supports 25 museums, island-wide as they organise activities and special events, almost all for free. Thirteen museums in Nicosia are preparing fun actions, while five in Larnaca, three in Limassol, four in Paphos and one in the Famagusta area continue the celebrations. A packed month awaits to welcome art and culture lovers but not only as the Museum Days hopes to gather people from all walks of life, no matter their previous involvements with the museum world.

“The objective of International Museum Day,” says an official statement, “is to raise awareness of the fact that museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples. This year’s theme, Museums, Sustainability and Wellbeing highlights the vital role that museums play in promoting sustainable development and well-being. As the world faces significant global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss and social inequality, museums can help educate the public on these issues and encourage action towards positive change.

“There are many ways in which museums can contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals: from supporting climate action and fostering inclusivity to tackling social isolation and improving mental health. Museums around the world participate in International Museum Day by hosting events, exhibitions and activities that explore the theme of sustainability and wellbeing. These events showcase how museums are working to reduce their environmental impact, promote sustainable practices, and educate the public on the importance of sustainability.

“Organised on and around the 18th of May each year,” it concludes, “International Museum Day celebrations can last a day, a weekend, a whole week or even a month. Participation in International Museum Day is growing internationally. ICOM is an international non-governmental organisation made up of over 45.493 museum professionals in 123 countries and territories.”

To find the full programme of events can be downloaded from the Department of Antiquities website (www.mcw.gov.cy/da) and social media as well as from the websites of the participating museums.
