Paphos police on Tuesday arrested a man for speeding, driving under the influence of and possession of illegal class A and B drugs.

According to police spokesman, Michalis Nikolaou shortly before midnight a police patrol on Democracy Avenue, intercepted a vehicle travelling at 102 km/h instead of the permitted 50 km/h.

Police identified the driver as a 25-year-old permanent resident who was accompanied by an 18-year-old passenger. The man was arrested for exceeding the speed limit and not wearing a seat belt. He subsequently tested positive in a drugs test.

The 18-year-old passenger handed over to police a bag, containing 3.5 g of cannabis, and 6 g of a white powder, suspected to be cocaine, was also found in the passenger seat.

The passenger told police that the drugs belonged to the driver of the vehicle.

The two were questioned by the drug squad and the 25-year-old allegedly took responsibility, saying he possessed the drugs for his own use. He was charged in writing and released to appear in court at a later date.

The passenger was questioned and released after no evidence emerged against him.
