Maintaining a stable and secure environment in the Eastern Mediterranean remains of the utmost strategic importance, President Nikos Christodoulides said on Thursday, participating in the proceedings of the 2nd European Political Community (EPC) Summit taking place in Chisinau, Moldova.

As stated in a presidency statement, in his intervention at a round table discussion on energy/connectivity, held in the framework of the summit, the President of the Republic said, that it is necessary to adopt a strategic approach in order to achieve the alignment of the energy market with the clean energy era, as well as investments in energy infrastructure.

“In order to accelerate the development of renewable energy in Europe, specific challenges must first be addressed, including the implementation of the necessary electrical interconnections for the uninterrupted flow of electricity, particularly from areas with extensive renewable energy sources, the simplification of procedures without bypassing environmental concerns, and others,” he added.

Christodoulides pointed out that speeding up procedures is an incentive for investors, since bureaucracy is a major obstacle to the creation of large-scale cross-border projects.

He also stressed that cooperation is the key to success, noting that the Eastern Mediterranean can be a model.

“In this context, maintaining a stable and secure environment in the Eastern Mediterranean remains of utmost strategic importance for the EU and beyond,” President Christodoulides said.
