The Council of Europe (CoE) honoured health affairs commissioner Stella Kyriakidou as one of the 75 outstanding women for their significant contributions to the advancement of human rights.

This recognition is part of a campaign commemorating the 75th anniversary of the organization’s establishment.

The selection aims to highlight the crucial role women play in promoting and strengthening principles and values related to human rights, democracy, and the rule of law.

“Kyriakidou’s commitment as the general rapporteur for children at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe facilitated Cyprus’s ratification of the Lanzarote Convention in 2014,” the campaign noted.

“Furthermore, her steadfast advocacy for human rights is evident through her rapporteur roles in numerous reports focusing on the rights of women, children, and the sick,” it concluded.

In 2017, Kyriakidou became the fourth woman and the first Cypriot to be elected president of the parliamentary assembly of the Council of Europe.
