An 18-year-old teenager was arrested following a traffic accident that killed 23-year-old Charalambos Chalaralambous in Paphos, police said early on Sunday.

The suspect is treated for his injuries at Paphos general hospital under police guard. He is expected to be discharged later in the day, police said.

A sample was taken from the teenager for an alcohol test and a narcotest with the results expected in the coming days.

The accident took place around 3.15am on the Prodromi to Latsi road in Paphos.

Charalambous was a passenger in a car driven by the 21-year-old Paphos man that was involved in a crash with a second vehicle.

The 21-year-old and the driver of the second vehicle, 18, were rushed to Paphos hospital.

Because of the severity of his condition, doctors transferred the 21-year-old to Nicosia hospital. His condition is critical.

Preliminary examination of the scene showed that none of the passengers in the two vehicles had been wearing their seatbelts.
