Physics professor and former rector of the University of Cyprus Constantinos Christofides announced on Friday he will run for president in the upcoming 2023 elections, backed by New Wave – The Other Cyprus.
The party said that its council had decided on the move due to the country’s political situation, offering a vision of Cyprus run by experts working towards radical and innovative change.
It also stated its key goals as modernising the nation, firmly working with the EU, innovative entrepreneurship, green growth, a credible solution to the Cyprus problem, meritocracy and equal opportunities.
New Wave called on all those who are seeking a real alternative and share its values to back it in the upcoming elections – adding that it will host an event at Pallas Theatre on May 29 from 10:30am-1pm.
Already in the running for the 2023 elections is Disy’s Averof Neophytou, former government minister Marios Eliades and lawyer Achilleas Demetriades.
Elsewhere, former foreign minister Nikos Christodoulides is widely expected to announce his candidacy, while former Cyprus problem negotiator Andreas Mavroyiannis has expressed his interest in running – potentially on an Akel sponsored bid. Economist Stelios Platis is also viewed as a potential competitor.
