Mirrors of the mind

exhibition open cover2

Art is back and the local scene in Nicosia is welcoming the new month with numerous art exhibitions and one of them will be hosted at a quirky coffee shop.

Nasty Cat Café on Digeni Akrita Street is hosting a one-day exhibition on September 9 featuring the works of 25-year-old artist Phil Joannides which are often described as meditative, psychedelic and mystical. Mirrors of the Mind, as the exhibition is titled, is the emerging artist’s second solo showcase in Cyprus and will open up its doors to the art-loving public between 5pm and 10pm.

“The paintings,” says the artist, “aim to capture the states of mind that lie beyond the egoistic rational consciousness which most of us inhabit during our waking hours. To be sure, this can be an incredibly valuable lens to look at life through when it comes to problem solving, but if you identify with it exclusively it becomes a restrictive prison.

“I hope,” he adds, “the images remind the viewer of just how deep their mind goes and of the connection they share with all of life underneath all the mental constructs. If someone has experienced these expanded states of awareness directly, I hope that the artwork will affirm their insights and that they might meet and connect with the others through the exhibition.”
