A large-scale crackdown was carried out in the Paphos district overnight, police said on Friday.

During the coordinated operation, officers carried out 62 vehicle stops, issued 22 traffic fines, made one arrest for drugs, and seized 14 computers, police said.

According to Paphos assistant police chief Michalis Nikolaou, the operation took place between Thursday 6.30pm and Friday 4am, under the direction of chief constable Klitos Erotokritos.,

One case dealt with shortly before 8pm in Chlorakas concerned an 18-year-old driver who was caught driving with 28g of cannabis and a precision scale. The 18-year-old was taken into custody and is being investigated.

In the Tombs of the Kings area, shortly after midnight, a 27-year-old driver was stopped and found to be in possession of a prohibited noxious gas launcher. The man was also arrested and is in custody.

Elsewhere, police carried out checks at two properties relating to noise pollution. On Ayios Antoniou street a 47-year-old was booked, and two loudspeakers and a CD player were seized as evidence. In a second case, the 33-year-old manager of a venue was also booked for use of two loudspeakers and a CD player. Neither possessed a licence to broadcast music.

The Paphos crime prevention unit acting on a judicial search warrant, also confiscated 14 computers from a property belonging to a 60-year-old man on suspicion that they had been converted into gambling machines with the installment of unauthorised software in violation of intellectual property law.

Targeted operations in the district started a month ago and are ongoing, Nikolaou said.
